The Practice
offers general medical services. That is acute and chronic
disease care. It is recognised as a minor injury centre but
has no x-ray facilities.
Health Promotion
For advice
about the following areas please see our Practice Nurses by
appointment:
"Well Person"
checks, heart disease prevention, weight management, smoking
cessation.
Also chronic
disease services including:-
Heart Disease,
Asthma, Diabetes, Joint Diseases, and Respiratory problems.
Family Planning &
Well Woman
All the
Doctors are happy to give family planning advice in surgery.
There are also Well Women clinics on at which diaphragms/caps and IUCD's can be
fitted.
Maternity Services
All the
Doctors provide maternity care and hold antenatal clinics with
the midwives on various afternoons, by appointment.
Parentcraft and relaxation classes are available. If you are
pregnant or thinking of becoming pregnant, please consult your
doctor.
Child Health
The Health Visitor Clinics are held every Tuesday between
9.30am and 11.30am, and Thursdays between 2.00pm and 3.00pm.
No appointment is necessary. At
intervals your child should be examined by your Health Visitor
or Children's Medical Officer
Vaccination/Immunisation & Travel
Children
A clinic is held on Friday afternoons 2.15 - 3.40pm for
Childhood Immunisation. Please telephone 690777 to make an
appointment with the practice nurse.
Adults & Travel
Please see the Practice Nurses preferably 3 months before
travel. In line with local guidance there will be a charge for
some vaccines when the sole purpose is for travel. The
recommended vaccine requirements for various countries often
changes and for the latest information we suggest that you
call Masta, Travellers Helpline, on 09068 224100. This is a
premium rate number. Alternatively you can visit their website
at www.masta.org We are an
International Yellow Fever Centre.
Minor
Surgery
All Doctors now offer certain minor surgical procedures.
They will advise you on what is possible.
Dermatology
Clinic
Dr
Ruth Harker (GP with Special Interest) holds Dermatology
Clinics covering the whole of the South Hams. GPs
from 18 practices send in their difficult cases
of distressing complaints such as acne, eczema and
psoriasis.Dr Harker’s particular specialism is skin
cancer and she performs surgery at these clinics
to remove skin cancers and if necessary performs
flaps or grafts to repair the skin defects.
School
Health Nursing Service, Ivybridge / Yealm Locality
The
School Health Nurse Service which is part of Devon
PCT NHS Trust is based at the health centre and
covers Ivybridge / Yealm locality including Ivybridge
Community College and the 14 primary schools within
the area.
School
Health Nurses are qualified nurses with additional
training which specifically related to the health
needs of school aged children. The work with children
and young people, their parents and carers as well
as teaching staff and other professionals providing
confidential support and information to help school
aged children stay healthy at school and beyond
their years. They work both with groups and individuals
at schools, clinics, home visits and drop ins.
Activities
include individual health assesments, including
screening of vision and hearing and measurement
of height and weight, school age immunisation programmes
as well as support for children with specific medical
problems and special needs within school. Other
activities range from advice and support in the
management of day and night time wetting to participation
in health education programmes in schools.
